Indonesia Nowadays

Globalization has been an issue that is being talked nowadays. It brings many effects to Indonesia, especially in terms of education. This time, Indonesia has to be ready to face globalization by having an equal standard of education with that of foreign countries. That reason brings bi-lingual education system in Indonesia because it is needed to equal the education in Indonesia with the education in the foreign country. Based on the information from Wikipedia the definition of bilingual education is as follows:
Bilingual education involves teaching academic content in two languages, in a native and secondary language with varying amounts of each language used in accordance with the program model.
Bi-lingual education has several points that have to be increased, three of which are the language, the subject matter, and the quality of students.
The first point is the aspect of the language. As what has been told above that bi-lingual education is one of the systems in teaching academic by using two languages in its application. In this part, the application at class includes how English is used as the second language in daily activities of the students. It may appear as the language which is used to transfer knowledge and information. On the other side, the application is used not only at class but also in the students’ activities at school. It can be shown in the students’ daily activities outside class, such as buying some food in the canteen or reading book at the library.
Then, the subject matter will be the following point of view. To develop a bi-lingual education system, the standard of the subject matters have to be concerned. We start from the standard that is used because the choice has to be the international standards that are applied in the foreign countries. The reason is if we want to equal our education with the education overseas, we have to use the same standards as the measurement. Besides, the subject matters are supposed to give the students more knowledge about foreign countries and their cultures.
After developing the aspect of the language and the subject matters, we are going to step to the quality of the students because this point will bring the biggest effect to the result of the bi-lingual education system. That is why it is important to do selection for the input of the students in the school with international standard. In this case, the good input will be easy to be lead especially if we use English as the second language for all subject matters at class. The other thing that has to be considered beside the quality of the student’s language skill is the quality of the student in subject matter. The consideration whether the student is good at the subject matters which are based on the international standard will decide the quality of the output of the student in the international standard school. This is the opinion from a student named Nurul about bi-lingual education system:
Bi-lingual education system is a good way to increase the quality of the human source in Indonesia. But, it will be complicated moreover for the students if they do not have English as their basic language.
Over all, bi-lingual education is one of the solutions supporting Indonesia to be equal to the other countries. It is started by having international standard in terms of education, such as using English as the second language, learning the subject matters that have international standard and increasing the quality of the students. In sort, bi-lingual education is important for Indonesia facing the globalization. In this case, supporting the bi-lingual education program is one of the ways to help Indonesia.
